SEATS OF HIGHER LEARNING
The best room arrangement for any given conference depends on how you want your meetings to flow.
Do you want strict control by the instructor, or a looser or more open forum? How much eye contact, interaction and participation do you want between participants… between participants and instructor?
How you arrange the seating will help the attendees understand what degree of participation is expected of them. So plan accordingly.
TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM
This classic arrangement is effective when the primary goal is acquiring knowledge. Computer-based training is a good example, as the interaction is often with the computer more than the instructor.
HOLLOW SQUARE
This conference style works best for group discussions and limited instructor presentations.
HORSESHOE
This U-shape works well when the session includes both a presentation and total group discussion.
CHEVRON
This arrangement gives all participants a clear view of the trainer and visual aids. They can easily switch from listening to a presentation to working in groups, and can communicate easily because of the unobstructed view.
